History

In March of 1958, George Aldighieri immigrated to Canada from Recoaro Terme, Vicenza, Italy. He resided in Windsor, Ontario for about one year. Upon an enjoyable visit to Hamilton, he decided to stay. George came to Canada with 5 years apprenticeship as a boiler-maker. He upgraded his education at Mohawk College, obtaining the necessary licenses for his trade, such as a gas fitter, steam fitter, heating master and boilermaker. He worked for various companies, including Babcock-Wilcox and Foster Wheeler, until he formed UNION BOILER COMPANY OF HAMILTON LIMITED in 1966.

His first location was at the corner of Sanford and Aikman St., until purchasing his present location at 163 Niagara Street. The property was once owned by William Thomas Carey, well known by Hamiltonians for running an icehouse on the property around 1883. In fact the old house he lived in was used as his office until he was able to build his present office and shop.

Union Boiler presently employs a staff of 9 and during the summer 10 -12. George believes in education and for a few months each year he employed co-op students from Mohawk College and Hi-Tech, to help them apprentice in their field. In fact, one is still employed with the company and has been with us since 1985.

Union Boiler has developed into a stable and reputable company and has an excellent reputation for honesty, service and quality, serving the Major Steel Plants, Education System, Hospitals, the City of Hamilton/Regional Municipality of Hamilton-Wentworth, Government buildings, Churches and large apartment buildings.

George’s son David began working with his father in 1982 at the age of 16 during his summer vacations, in order to learn the basics of the trade. Upon completion of the Mechanical Engineering Technician course at Sheridan College, he became employed full time, with the hopes of taking charge one day. David is currently Vice-President of the company.

In September of 1991, UNION BOILER COMPANY OF HAMILTON LIMITED celebrated its 25th Anniversary, and was honoured with a Certificate of Recognition from the City of Hamilton and the honourable Mayor Robert Morrow. George also was honoured with a Gold Medal from the Chamber of Commerce in Vicenza Italy for his work and economic progress in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada.
